Peace Pole Dedication

Sister Rosemary Brosseau, CND

On June 5, many CND’s in Kingston responded to Eleanor Monahan’s invitation to participate in the “Dedication of Our Peace Pole” at Briargate Retirement Community where Eleanor lives. This is the first Peace Pole erected in the Kingston area and it was Eleanor’s initiative along with the wholehearted support of the staff and residents that made it possible. The quotation, “May peace prevail on earth” is inscribed on the pole in the four languages that represent most of the residents and staff of Briargate: English, French, German and Dutch. One of the residents read the quote in his/her language.

We learned that the Peace Pole Project was founded in 1975 in Japan. It is now an internationally recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family standing vigil in silent prayer for peace on earth. There are tens of thousands of peace poles in 180 countries all over the world (one at the Motherhouse, one at Dawson and where else?) On this World Environment Day, during her opening remarks Eleanor spoke of our need to be peaceful in our relationships with people and all forms of life on our planet.

After the meaningful ritual we sat at tables, and chatted with the residents and the staff who seemed very proud of this undertaking in their community. We were served tea and sweets made by the residents. We left with joy and with a greater awareness of the mutual blessings of CND’s living in these communities.
