Journaling with Mary…

Della Gaudet, CND

Waiting for baby

I awake each morning

A song of praise on my lips;

I, Mary of Nazareth, wife, of Joseph the carpenter

Carry within my being the child of the Promise.

Everything is ready:

The swaddling clothes freshly made,

the warm sheepskin blanket to keep him warm at night,

the birthing blanket for receiving the new life,

the cradle so lovingly carved by Joseph’s hands.

Even my body is readying itself

to feed a new mouth hungry for more milk.

Indeed, I am blessed.

Blessed because of this child I carry.

Shattering News!

We have to leave!

The emperor wants to know how many persons he owns!

We could refuse the summons

Who would miss two unknowns from

As woe-begone a place like Nazareth?

But Joseph is a just man; he will obey the law.

We leave…leaving behind the cradle…the extra blankets…

Taking only what I can carry on the back of the donkey.

It will be a four-days’ journey by caravan

Somewhat like refugees seeking a place to lay our heads.
