Birthday Celebrations at the Health Care Centre

The month of May is a particularly celebratory month for noteworthy birthdays at the CND Health Care Center. On May 5th, Sister Edna Levangie celebrated her 99th birthday. On May 8th Sister Jean Grant celebrated her 101st with her immediate family in attendance. The celebration was well attended by the Sydney area sisters. Great thanks to Sr. Elaine Hawrylak and Sr. Mary Corbett who provided musical entertainment which everyone enjoyed.

Jo-Ann McLean, coordinator CND Health Care Center

God of passionate life, who sends the sparks,

who lights the inner blaze and tends the flame,

fill us with your radiance, enkindle us with your love.

Touch us with your goodness

so that we will be the kindling of your generous compassion.

God of radiant love, we ask your blessing

on all our Associates and Sisters across Visitation Province

as we journey towards our first Assembly

and in a special way, on all who will gather on Pentecost weekend.

May we join hearts, minds and voices

as together we celebrate the gift of CND Associate Relationship.

Watch over and deepen our faith and courage,

so that we may breathe and echo your love.

May the dreams and inspiration of Marguerite continue to dance around us

in a quest to bring New Life to this New Day in our Associate story.

May your dreams find a home in us and may your Spirit guide and prompt us

to be ON FIRE FOR MISSION wherever we go.

We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Area Gathering – Kelowna, BC

The West has been Blessed! On May 8th, Sisters Becky McKenna and Catherine Walker visited. Sister Nancy Hurren, CND and associates from the area were invited to an evening of visitation as Becky and Catherine led us in prayer, reflection, and sharing, based on the new Mission Statement. There were associates from Kelowna, Summerland and Kamloops. A time of fellowship and snack was held afterwards.

West Kootenay Regional gathering

West Kootenay CND Sister & Associates welcomed Provincial Visitation Team Leader, Sister Becky McKenna and Team Councillor, Sister Catherine Walker on May 10th as they generously travelled across our vast country in order to personally help us deepen our experience of Provincial Chapter directives.  The Sisters shared some of their own experiences of this particular Chapter, ie, how Provincial and General Chapters had common orientation -- contemplative stance and going to the peripheries; the moving experience of contemplative prayer in the larger group; the contribution, the table talk and the mutuality of sisters and associates; the inclusion of fun time; and the contributions of the priests whose generosity made liturgy possible. We were presented with a beautiful glossy card with the photo of a partially opened door leading into a mysterious garden.  The conversation inspired by the card was moving and a perfect backdrop to the breaking open of sharing and enlightenment on the topics of contemplation and peripheries.  While it is hoped the photo may be used as an inspiration for contemplation in one’s own home, there was sharing by many on tools they already use that help to lead into contemplative prayer.  In discussing peripheries, we are reminded that Marguerite directs us to seek and be present to the peripheries in our midst. We reflected and shared on our own personal experiences.  The peripheries we see all around us are so many and so varied.  Comments afterwards during refreshments reflected appreciation for a deepened understanding on both topics. Well done Sisters Becky & Catherine!

"Resurrection Hope – Pentecost Blessings" – That was the theme of our retreat held on May 7–9 at Andrews of Charlottetown. We were blessed to have Sister Denise Bérubé as our facilitator. Her inspiring reflections, prayer practices, meaningful symbols, appropriate handouts and sacred music provided a true retreat atmosphere. It was such a timely topic as we draw near to the end of the Easter Season and prepare for Pentecost! Thank you, Denise!

Conversations of the Heart: Our Conversations of the Heart group met on Sunday, May 13th for sharing our experience and a pot-luck supper. The chosen topic for this month was the LCWR Winter 2018 article, A Fresh Perspective on the Vows, by Sister Maria Cimperman, RSCJ.

The preparation for this gathering and the consequent sharing was indeed a “refreshing look” for us and a notable preparation for the formal renewal of our vows come May 31st. Sr. Maria reminded us that our vows will be best lived within our charism and context of our daily lives. Some of us discovered anew that this is indeed where we are being called today. In our local and global context, we find ourselves in a very diverse, interconnected and multicultural world. Our communal witness to lives of deep love and caring through our vowed life has become broader and more needed than ever in our broken world.

In our previous gathering, we enjoyed the DVD, Encuentro, A Call for Our Times which included many marvellous quotes from Pope Francis.  As we know, he is very strong on the need for us to move beyond our comfort zones to share the Good News of Jesus and His love for all people. Today, he says, we need to live the “Gospel of encounter.” Both this DVD and the above article on the vows almost spell out for us how to live out our CND General and Provincial Directives! This seems like a wonderful confirmation of where the Spirit has been and will continue to lead us forward in our Visitation spirituality.

Congratulations to Sister Susan Kidd, CND, who received a UPEISU honorary membership for her outstanding service to students at the University of Prince Edward Island!

An honour well deserved!
