Rose Mary Sullivan, CND

This summer, I received a newsletter from Fukushima. It included letters written by some students who received financial aid from the fund established by our Congregation of Notre Dame Sisters. The focus of that program is ministering to people, mostly elderly, who have been dislocated by the triple tragedy and living apart from their families. This living singly is very counter-cultural for the Japanese. The people of Fukushima and the surrounding areas so affected by the earthquake, tsunami, and meltdown are still dealing with tremendous challenges. The world and their own country seemed to have moved on. Japan is presently focused on the upcoming Olympics. I am including this letter as an indication of what your generous responses helped to make to make possible and to ask you again to lift up the needs of the people of Fukushima in your prayers.

I am a happy recipient of the Tomoshibi Kai Scholarship. I started receiving the grant as of November 2014, and today I would like to thank you for the help, as well as give you my good news about my future plan. Limited as I am, I feel I have done my best enjoying my studies and happy time with my friends. Yes, these two years have been a fruitful college life for me. After my graduation from this junior college, I plan to go to a confectioner training school, with a purpose to open my own confectionery. Before the Earthquake, my dream was to be a patisserie, and bake all kinds of delicious cake and make everybody happy. However, with the course of time, I wanted to contribute in rebuilding Fukushima which needs our help. Now I want to help people experience the good quality of the food produced in Fukushima by opening a shop in Minami Soma, my native town. My dream is now to help rebuild Fukushima. The precious donation you sent me for the past two years helped me to dedicate myself to studies. It gave me joy and courage. There were certain things I would never have achieved without your help. Now it is my turn to realize dreams in others. Please extend my gratitude to all those who sent me the grant, and to those who looked after the details of the payment. Thank you! Thank you, everybody! May you be blessed with much happiness in return. A Graduate of the Dietetics Course, Sakura no Seibo Junior College
