On the Feast of Pentecost, May 15, eight women made their first commitment as Associates of the Congregation de Notre Dame at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hayesville, NC. The ceremony was conducted after communion at the 9 am Liturgy. New Associates Kathy Aparo, Michele McGinnis, and Shirley Moran added their voices to the beautiful choir music. Linda Kennedy and Margaret DeLisle were Eucharistic Ministers. In the late afternoon, we had a dinner party at new Associate Pam Craig’s home. The picture above is at Pam’s house and is missing Sharon Ely. Barbara McGrattan, second from the left, is one of the Associates who led the formation for the new Associates. Sandy Jersey, in the second picture, became an Associate on May 31.

Let me give you a very brief introduction of each of these nine dedicated women:

  • Kathy Aparo shares her written spiritual insights with the parish and others and began and facilitates a spiritual books club.
  • Pam Craig has discovered in Visitation a language for all she does with love and joy and serves on the parish education commission.
  • Margaret Delisle is convinced the parish needs this alive and active Associate Community and helps facilitate the bereavement group.
  • Sharon Ely, with her strong devotion to Mary, finds Visitation natural to her. With her giving and peaceful personality, she seeks with the other Associates to continue the mission of the Sisters.
  • Sandy Jersey sees herself walking in the shoes of Marguerite Bourgeoys in her many ministries (local food pantry, parish gift store, etc.) and desires to witness to her commitment to Marguerite.
  • Linda Kennedy approaches people she visits for the St. Vincent de Paul Society with the Visitation attitude of acceptance and understanding. She is also doing prison ministry and is a member of Green Faith.
  • Dolores Libby is committed to children’s faith formation in the parish among other ministries and believes the Associates will discover other needed ministries.
  • Michele McGinnis developed and executed the design for the Marguerite Bourgeoys Center (the faith formation room in the parish facility) and serves on the finance committee and with Habitat.
  • Shirley Moran names Marguerite as “my kind of woman” and leads the parish bereavement group. She has been called the “female soul of parish”.
