Book Review

Recently I came across this timely little book: Prophets in Their Own Country: Women Religious Bearing Witness to the Gospel in a Troubled Church by Sandra Schneiders. (Orbis Books, Maryknoll, NY 2011. 132 pages. $20 new).

It is a collection of previously published papers, clearly explaining the history of religious life: monastic, apostolic and now ministerial, following fidelity to the renewal invited by the Vatican Council, which referred to religious life as a gift to the church. Sandra writes: "Adversity often calls out of people conviction, strength, and commitment they were not conscious of possessing." Richard Rohr recommends her book to all who hope the Spirit will continue to be with us in our church. He says: "This is the best book on the life, ministries and history of religious women today".
