Feast of St Marguerite Celebrated in Sydney, NS

Dianne MacAskill

To the chorus of the hymn to St. Marguerite Bourgeoys written by Sister Rita Clare, many Congregation of Notre Dame sisters and associates and laity paid respect on her feast day. The church St. Marguerite Bourgeoys named in honor of her patroness Saint Marguerite celebrated a mass and exposition of her relic on Jan 12, 2016 in Sydney, N.S. Father Bill Burke expressed his joy in such a large crowd attending this mass on a cold winter's night. During his homily, Deacon Robert Coleman reflected on his personal life being taught by the Congregation of Notre Dame sisters and what a productive experience it became. He spoke of the care the Congregation of Notre Dame Japanese sisters provided to the children and needy families during the March 2011 Fukushima nuclear plant explosion. He stated Marguerite Bourgeoys herself encountered many challenges, attacks, threats in her life before being canonized in 1982. Deacon Coleman stated that the Church of Marguerite Bourgeoys in Sydney is honoured to be designated one of the pilgrim churches for the Antigonish Diocese during the Jubilee Year of Mercy and that the holy Door is open for reconciliation, compassion, forgiveness and kindness. He closed with her quote "I never doubted the mercy of God, I knew that I would always hope in God, even if I saw myself with one foot in hell."
