The 2nd Sunday of Advent

Are most of you familiar with the phrase “time flies”? there really are 60 beats to every minute and 60 minutes to very hour but have you ever been amazed at just how fast one hour goes by? This doesn’t wane either as time passes, as my minutes and hours accumulate, I find immediately the word “prepare” comes to mind. I am called to prepare. There was one who came before us a time when a diet of locusts and wild honey would be at the top of the menu and be socially acceptable; however, it’s a new day, eh? There had to have been something very powerful in his diet because of all John the Baptist was able to do as he “prepared the way of the Lord”!!!

First Advent Reflection

In Sunday’s first reading, Isaiah describes a loving, creative God “O Lord, you are our father; we are the clay and you the potter; we are all the work of your hands.” God molds us in God’s image, in life and transcending life. Having lost my wife Linda one year ago this week, the readings brought to mind a story early on in our journey with cancer.

A Christmas "Pome"

The eight year old child wrote a poem as a gift. I quote it exactly as it was written:

Christmas Pome

On Christmas day

You wake up to

Presints, and

Everyone thinks it’s pleasint.

But the most pleasint thing of all is

Jesus being born.

Honduras

Our hearts are broken with those of our Sisters and Associates in Central America at the devastation wrought by the two recent hurricanes, and many are asking how they can help. It is not possible for us to send money directly to the Sisters, but the General Leadership Team has sent them a sizeable contribution in the name of all in the Congregation. They recommend that those of us who wish contribute to a well-known agency based in the United States that provides aid to Central America, like Catholic Relief Services. All of us continue to carry our suffering Central American sisters and brothers in prayer.

STIR

Have you noticed these STIR announcements on Facebook and other social media? In July 2020, Sr. Sheila Sullivan, Arleen D Souza (a young adult whom we met at Theology on Tap) and Sr. Josephine Badali began to gather bi-weekly with young adults via Zoom for an hour of Lectio Divina prayer. The prayer is simple and the sharing is profound. The group varies. We are generally around 12 in the group: young women and men and three of us “older” women. There is a woman from Argentina who joins us regularly, as others from Prince Edward Island, Montreal and Toronto. We now meet every three (3) weeks. Our next gathering will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 26. Perhaps you know a young adult who would be interested in joining us. Just send us their name and email address and we will send the Zoom link close to the date of the prayer. Also, if you see the ad on the social network, please share it. This will allow us to reach a greater audience. Thanks for your prayerful support. Sheila Sullivan and Josephine Badali

Marguerite Bourgeoys 400th Anniversary Retreat

Sixteen sisters and associates responded to Sisters Jo, Sheila and Maura’s invitation to pray the 400th Retreat together. We gathered on four Monday mornings and shared our personal reflections on the wonderful and inspiring material: In the Garden of Our Common Home with Marguerite. During our last gathering this past Monday, we were asked for a word that has evoked within us during our shared retreat experience. The word cloud is a collection of what surfaced and a glimpse into the richness of the group. May Marguerite continue to inspire, guide and unite us during this year of uncertainty!

INTERNATIONALITY-INTERCULTURALITY PRAYER 2020

INTERNATIONALITY-INTERCULTURALITY PRAYER 2020

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JESUS PILGRIM

AND A MIGRANT, REFUGEE, DISPLACED AND MOBILE MARGUERITE BOURGEOYS

As Jesus taught, in the footsteps of Mary our Teacher, and as experienced by so many people in the world who are Migrants, Refugees, Displaced, Mobile, 400 years after the birth of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys we celebrate the joy of living and being pilgrims for life; pilgrims in our way of living and celebrating our faith; and pilgrims accompanying humanity, a humanity that does not stop moving forward in search of meaning, food, shelter, work, health, love, peace, justice, security, liberty, truth, God.

The Sisters of Résidence Bon-Secours in Montréal could not gather physically, but united in spirit and prayer to remember and celebrate the lives of their companions called into the fullness of life this past year. Our small community is missing four of its members ... Anastasia Murphy, Joyce Roberts, Patricia Landry and Katherine Coltart. Through prayer, song and reflection, we remembered and gave thanks for so much gift.

In unity with each of you and all in our world experiencing loss and called into being and offering HOPE wherever and however we can,

Halloween Bingo at Providence Motherhouse – Kingston

Who said Halloween is for children? Perhaps it is because many of the sisters and staff let loose their inner child in the dining room at Providence Motherhouse. To enhance the environment, the costumes worn by staff and many of the sisters were most creative and some even had us guessing the identity of the person so adorned. As always, safe distancing was observed as the regular Thursday Bingo got under way. Bingo winners are always eager to choose the mystery prize. This week, hidden between the pages of a calendar was the $5 bill. Special treats appropriate to the Halloween theme were enjoyed by all. This is just one of the many opportunities offered to provide socialization and enjoy variety in our lives during the COVID-19 reality.

Beatified Fr. Michael J. McGivney

A five year old boy, dressed in a new grey suit, carried a relic of the newly beatified Fr. Michael J. McGivney, and presented it to the Pope’s delegate at the beatification ceremony last week in Saint Joseph’s Cathedral in Hartford, CT. As he approached the altar the child held both his parents’ hands, but when it came time for holding the relic he did it all by himself.

Kankakee Associates: Serving God and Others

Over a year ago, Associates from Kankakee, IL, decided to use their gifts of knitting and crocheting to start a Prayer Shawl Ministry at their parish. During that time, one of the candidates from their group became sick and started chemotherapy. The Kankakee Associates took turns accompanying her to her treatments. They gave her a prayer shawl and a hat to lift her spirits and to let her know she was not alone. As time went by, the candidate asked if the Prayer Shawl Ministry could make hats for other women that were receiving treatment at the cancer center...

A Season of Hope

Who could have dreamed as we entered 2020 that the whole world would be dealt the blow of COVID-19, that millions of people’s lives would be forever changed?

I dare to guess no one.

Yet that is exactly what has happened and the world still looks for a reprieve, a cure, an end. Has this virus had the final say?

I also dare to say a resounding no.

How to describe it? As Charles Dickens so famously said in A Tale of Two Cities, “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.”

St. Marguerite Bourgeoys and the Congregation of Notre-Dame Honoured in Kingston, Ontario

On a beautiful October day, a sturdy Sugar Maple tree was planted in City Park, Kingston, Ontario. It was accompanied by a commemorative plaque that read:

“Dedicated to the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame in honour of the 400th Anniversary of the birth of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, foundress of the Congregation of Notre Dame in Canada 1620 – 1700.”
