Associate News: Report of the First Assembly, April 17 – 19, 2015 in Wilton, CT

Forty eight associates and three candidates representing all but two of our fifteen US and online communities responded to The Call to Visitation: The Associate Relationship, Past, Present and Future. Eighteen Congregation of Notre Dame sisters participated in all or part of the weekend.

The group first journeyed back in time, led by sisters Joan Mahoney and Mary Ann Rossi, to The Origins of the Associate Relationship: Marguerite Bourgeoys’ Experience and Vision. Thus inspired, the associates and sisters were further invigorated by a rousing presentation by facilitator, Sr. Barbara Mullen, CSJ, aptly entitled Fire in the “Whole: Living an Explosive, Expanding Love. Reflection on Charism.”

Central Committee of Associate Relationship Met in Montreal August 12-16

Anna Rowley and I began our journey together as Visitation East Co-Coordinators while attending the Annual Meeting of the Central Committee of Associate Relationship. We joined Sisters and Associates from Japan, Central America, Cameroon, France, United States and various places in Canada. When we arrived on Wednesday afternoon, we met Mary Chimy from Cameroon. She hadn’t been outside the mother house so we included her in our walk around the neighbourhood and took lots of pictures. Mary wanted to send pictures back to her children in Cameroon.

The theme for the Meeting was “Our Rock and Our Foundation”. From the Writings of Marguerite Bourgeoys (page 180) we find, “The rocks tell that they receive their firmness and strength from God”.

New ministry as Co-Coordinator in Visitation East

It is with joy in my heart that I begin this ministry as Co-Coordinator in Visitation East. Marjorie and others have been generous in showing me the ropes as I settle into this new position. Born and raised in Toronto I attended university in Thunder Bay, Ontario and then taught for over five year in Manitouwadge, Ontario where I met my husband, Eric. We married and settled in Montreal, his hometown, and my closer connection with our Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys began. I knew of Marguerite Bourgeoys as an educator, part of the fabric of Canadian history and a holy woman of the church. Twice weekly I attended continuing education classes at McGill University and the Sherbrooke bus took me past the former mother house; today’s Dawson College. I was struck time and again by the statue of Our Lady of Protection atop the building and it was always a time to offer a prayer and reflect. It wasn’t until we moved to Grafton, NB that I connected with Congregation of Notre Dame sisters and associates and what a blessing that has been in my life! I look forward to meeting associates throughout the Maritimes as Bernadette, Marjorie and I visit groups this autumn. Please keep me in your prayers as I find my place in this ministry and be assured you are in mine.

Blessings, Anna
