On Saturday, May 9, I joined Sr. Marilyn Medinger and more than 200 others at an Education Conference sponsored by Sisters and Brothers of Immigrants in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Bishop Kicanas, Bishop of Tucson, gave the keynote- a clear presentation of the USCCB’s position and goals for Immigration Policy in the US. Four workshops were offered including Understanding Detention Through the Eyes of a Correction Officer led by a correction officer from McKinley County Jail where many detainees are held. Finally, we heard the moving personal testimony of two young men who currently live in the Marie Joseph Houses for Detainees in the Chicago area. Sr. Marilyn lives in one of these post detention residences. The Conference was excellent and well received. I was delighted that the Congregation of Notre Dame was a co-sponsor of the day which informed and encouraged those who are committed to shaping compassionate national policies on immigration.
