Forty eight associates and three candidates representing all but two of our fifteen US and online communities responded to The Call to Visitation: The Associate Relationship, Past, Present and Future. Eighteen Congregation of Notre Dame sisters participated in all or part of the weekend.

The group first journeyed back in time, led by sisters Joan Mahoney and Mary Ann Rossi, to The Origins of the Associate Relationship: Marguerite Bourgeoys’ Experience and Vision. Thus inspired, the associates and sisters were further invigorated by a rousing presentation by facilitator, Sr. Barbara Mullen, CSJ, aptly entitled Fire in the “Whole: Living an Explosive, Expanding Love. Reflection on Charism.”

Against that stirring backdrop, the associates set out to work. They first assessed the present day Associate Relationship. In rotating table groups, they prayed and answered the questions: Why did I come; why do I stay and what do I value? The Assembly next discerned what actions needed to be taken to ensure that we can continue to satisfy the communal responses to those questions. Again working in groups, nine categories of action items emerged that were masterfully consolidated by the facilitator into four areas for future planning: Membership, Development of Future Leaders, Sustainability and Technology. The Assembly unanimously agreed that next steps would lead to the creation of a Strategic Plan for Associate Relationship.

A Core Committee of associates is now formed to lead the creation of the Strategic Plan with the continued facilitation of Sr. Barbara Mullen. The members of the Core Committee will be charged to involve many associates in sub-committee work in the four areas chosen by the Assembly. The four sub-groups will report back to the Core Committee, which will then prepare a draft of a Strategic Plan for review at the Second Assembly planned for March 31- April 2, 2017
