Fourth Sunday of Lent: From the Gospel of John 3: 14-21

Theresa Ann MacNeil, St. Theresa’s Associate

In the Gospel of John Chapter 3 verses 14-21, Jesus explains to Nicodemus “as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert (Numbers 21:7-9) so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” Jesus goes on to teach Nicodemus about God's endless love for His children. God so loved the world, that He sent His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. God's love is so great and incomparable to any other love. God gives us the gift of salvation, life forever, through His beloved Son. Whoever believes and has faith in Him will not come to destruction or be condemned. Jesus did not come into the world to abolish it. God sent Jesus into the world to save it. Salvation comes from the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and if Christ did not rise from the dead we would be without hope and our faith in God would be in vain.

Jesus became the light so we would not be lost in the darkness of sin and evil, living a life of self-destruction. Jesus is the light in the world for those who believe He is the Son of God. Those who do not believe live in darkness and sin, and do not come to the light. They separate themselves from God, unless they repent of their sins and turn away from their evil deeds. God so loved the world that he continues to give Jesus in Word and Sacramental flesh and blood for our salvation.

Through the Eucharist He continues to make our everyday life sacred by transforming with His presence. God continues to send His beloved sons and daughters, all of us, to continue His mission in the world today. God wants us to use our gifts that come from His Holy Spirit to bring about His presence in the world.

We are the Body of Christ. We need Christ and Christ needs us to share His love and brighten up someone's day so they will truly believe in the unfailing light of Jesus Christ.

LET OUR LIGHT SHINE.               An unknown author captures our mission of salvation:

On the street I saw a small girl,
Cold and shivering in a thin dress,
with little hope of a decent meal.
I became angry and said to God:
Why did you permit this?
Why don't you do something about it?
For a while God said nothing.
That night God replied quite suddenly:
"I certainly did something about it.
 - I made you."
