From Our Leadership Team

Our October meeting was two very full days of reflection--though we did make time to celebrate Sr. Mary Anne Powers’ birthday!

We heartily endorse Sr. Rose Mary Sullivan’s call to recommit ourselves to some aspect of the 2016-2021 Orientation. We hope all Sisters and Associates will let her know which aspect of the Orientation will be their focus for this year. You might consider having a simple ritual for the recommitment. Rose Mary notes that the Associates have already described actions they have taken.

For the 400th Anniversary of Marguerite Bourgeoys’s Birth, Sr. Jackie Hanrahan has begun exploring the possibility of our hosting a production of Second to Nun, a one-woman musical about Marguerite.

LCWR has recently published a wonderful article in its Resolutions to Action publication. “A Crucial Midterm Pivot" by Quincy Howard, OP calls for "a civic transformation that shifts our nation’s collective consciousness and public discourse." Believing that such a transformation begins with individual conversion, she offers a challenging examen for all of us. I highly recommend it.

A Quonnie Blessing!  This past weekend, some staff from NDA High School and Elementary School joined Sr. Mary Jane Hebert and me for an early autumn “Getaway” at our beloved Quonnie. I have wanted to do this for some years, and am so happy that it finally happened! The weather was just perfect – sunny and warm, and the companionship very comfortable. There were many “Visitation Moments”, some prayer, plenty of walks in the neighborhood and on the beach, good food and conversations. Our visitors were AMAZED at the beauty and restfulness of our home and its oceanic surroundings. I THANK YOU for being able to share this Congregation of Notre Dame Treasure with them! Now, they want to make this an annual experience, and others who were unable to go this year, want to go the “next time”! I certainly hope we can give this gift again to those who share our ministry so generously and cheerfully. They are MOST GRATEFUL to the Sisters for sharing this piece of Heaven with them.

Gratefully, Anne Seeley, CND

Summer Retreat Reflection – Sr. Joann Compagno

Following our June 23 Province gathering about the REALM study, five of us were blessed with a retreat at VND in Wilton. The theme was “Aging as a Spiritual Practice.” It seemed the ideal follow-up for me after our meeting on our health care and Province future.

Our guide was a Sister of Charity from Convent Station, Sr. Anita Constance. Her message – go deeper as we age, relish the slowing down and the time to pray and prepare our inner life as our physical world is changing day by day.

Throughout the week, a very creative one, Sr. Anita used awe-inspiring visual imagery accompanied by modern Christian music and storytelling.

Associate News – Sr. Joan Mahoney & Donna Wuhrer

Associate Retreat at Quonnie:  On the weekend of September 21-23, Villa Margarita was filled with the love, laughter, prayers, and sharing of 25 Associates and 4 Sisters for the yearly Associate retreat at Quonnie. This year’s theme was “Spiritual Friendship and Companionship: Supporting One Another in our Relationship with God and Love for One Another in the Congregation of Notre Dame Tradition”. Associates enjoyed presentations on Visitation, Group Spiritual Direction, and Spiritual Midwives-Spiritual Directors as well as time to reflect and renew friendships.  A special thanks to the retreat planning team: Dorothy Callahan, Sr. Joan Mahoney, Sharon Norton, Vicki Remson, Sr. Mary Ann Rossi, and Donna Wuhrer.  Also, we are very grateful to Sr. Marilyn Doucette and Sr. Pat Jamele for the delicious food they prepared for the weekend!

Peace & Justice News – Sr. Rose Mary Sullivan

I am so touched by this logo for the upcoming meeting of the International Union of Superiors General (UISG). I have a wonderful resource to offer you to enliven your response to the invitation we have received to engage in Sowing the Seeds of Hope for our Planet. Sr. Mary Anne Foley and I attended a lecture by Elizabeth Johnson at the Sparkill Dominican Motherhouse. The talk was wonderful and made the trip through torrential rains worthwhile. It’s available at: https://www.sparkill.org/Public/EJohnsonLecture.htm

It is somewhat disheartening to know that in 2017, the U.S. was the only nation in the Americas to carry out an execution — for the ninth consecutive year. However, we know that abolition of the death penalty is within reach. Just this year, among the more than 20,000 signatures to the National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty were 65 Religious Congregations. You can sign that pledge here. Over 13,000 letters were sent promoting clemency through the Mercy in Action Project. 1,000 personal appeals were sent to legislators in repeal states. Thank you for also sowing seeds of hope for a consistent ethic of life.

The Partnership for Global Justice has informed me that registration is now open for next year's Commission on the Status of Women (March 11 - 22, 2019 at the UN).

  • Priority theme: Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls;
  • Review theme: Women’s empowerment and the link to sustainable development
