Visitation Province

Our Conversations of the Heart group has been gathering monthly since February 2012. Our time together includes a check-in, time for contemplative prayer, reflection and dialogue on our designated topic, followed by supper together. Members assume leadership of our gatherings. On Sunday, June 17th, we shifted our place to Montague and our agenda to "feast"! We enjoyed well-cooked lobsters from North Rustico. Even without an agenda, our conversation touched on some current topics – the presence of Buddhist nuns in the Montague area and how we minister to young people in our midst. We enjoyed the warm summertime sky and countryside including the space we had, deck and all. We missed Anne and Noreen and look forward to September's re-grouping.

Prayer Request

Dominus Vobiscum Centre for Marriage and Family Retreat in Montreal is having a retreat for single mothers on the weekend of June 24, the feast of St. Jean Baptist. Single mothers are being brought together to share in fellowship and support within a Catholic context. These moms struggle in isolation to face the challenges of faith, work, and raising a family in a world, both secular and religious, that offers little in the way of spiritual or community support. We are asking sisters and associates to pray that the retreat will be fruitful for these women and those who will journey with them.

YouTube Ted Talk Recommendations

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is an award-winning writer from Nigeria who has given one of the 10 most-viewed Ted talks in history. It's called "The Danger of a Single Story" (20 minutes) in which she shares stories of her experiences in which we all, including herself, encounter others based on our cultural and racial stereotypes. You can view it at https://youtu.be/D9Ihs241zeg.

Another of her Ted talks also widely viewed is "We Should All Be Feminists" (30 minutes) at https://youtu.be/hg3umXU_qWc

Book Recommendation

Feeding My Mother by Jann Arden. (Random House, Canada, 2017). A friend loaned me this book and I love it! Jann is totally down-to-earth, honest, funny (hilarious, at times), as she chronicles her experience caring for her aging parents. Her gift for writing metaphors can make a scene jump right off the page. The book reads like a diary, with pictures, dialogue and recipes. Jann shares her way of continuing learning as life moves on. In her time being a caregiver to her Dad, who has since died, and to her Mom, living with Alzheimer’s, Jann understands more about herself. She writes about experiencing a deep gratitude and gentle peace with herself. She learns to live “in the now,” not feeling compelled to put effort or energy into control or change. This book offers comfort, even joy, to anyone involved as a caregiver.
