A Stand Against Solitary Confinement

Rose Mary Sullivan

Dear Sisters and Associates,

There is a great DVD called Breaking Down the Box. It is effective in showing the terrible effects of solitary confinement. Both issues Death Penalty and Solitary Confinement as a form of torture are Province Corporate Stands.

Please take note of two major movements towards change in our U.S. criminal justice systems. They are also two of our Province Corporate Stands. First, there is an increasing call for the end of the death penalty across our nation. I invite you to find a way to participate in this movement. I am emailing you a Continuum of Actions for your consideration. It is not exhaustive but it is a beginning. Choose something(s) you can do to hasten the end of the death penalty. If you create your own action, let me know what it is and I’ll offer it as an addition to the Continuum. This is a very promising time to abolish the Death Penalty, let’s not waste it.

Second, President Obama has directed meaningful restrictions for the use of solitary confinement in Federal Prisons. I am sure it is his hope that State Prisons will follow his lead. There is a growing movement in our country which sees solitary confinement as an abuse of power and even as a form of torture. I am emailing you a petition to End Prolonged Solitary Confinement Now for you to sign and for you to get others to sign. Please return the completed petitions as directed on the form. I will send my emails on February 1st. This is also a very promising time to abolish the use of torture, let’s not waste it.
