Visitation Province Assembly - Wednesday - July 8, 2015

Visitation Province Assembly communication team

We enjoyed beautiful sunshine as we began our day in Toronto.

We opened our day with 20 minutes of Contemplative Prayer, “Oh, will you come and let me go with you?” Nancy Sylvester, our Assembly facilitator, asked us to surrender ourselves to the inner space in which God dwells. The prayer continued with Carolyn McDade’s song, “Compassion Place,” followed by the Prayer for the Assembly.”

Nancy introduced a process for exploration of “organic expressions of leadership” following up on yesterday’s presentation by the governance committee. She asked us to work in triads and practice listening and responding with a contemplative heart. Each person was to share:

  • What is your understanding of organic leadership suitable to our needs at this time?
  • What excites you?
  • What are the challenges?
  • What are your concerns as you move forward?

We each spent some time in quiet reflection about the questions and then shared our responses. During the discussion, it was mentioned that Marguerite Bourgeoys said that all members are equal; each has a voice; the person who is superior today might be the cook tomorrow and the cook may become the Superior. There was lots discussion about the understanding of “organic leadership.” Images, metaphors and words were used to describe what organic leadership meant.

The governance committee asked for feedback at the end of the discussion. Their question to the sisters was, “What do you want to say to the governance committee to help them move  forward to the next level with their work?”

The afternoon opened with everyone enthusiastically singing the Province Assembly song, “How Then Shall I Live,” by Linnea Good, while viewing some pictures that have been taken at the Assembly.

In the afternoon, Nancy moved us forward in a process to invite each other to deepen the living out of our Visitation Province Directional Statement. This process will provide:

  • A framework of how we can deepen our commitment
  • Direction to the elected leadership team

After spending some time in contemplation, each person was asked to write an Invitation to  deepen the personal and communal  commitment to the Directional Statement. We used contemplative inquiry as each person presented her invitation at the table. From all the invitations, the participants at each table were asked to develop one “Invitation” to go forward to tomorrow’s Assembly.

Wednesday evening was a free time so some ventured out to explore Toronto or visit with friends and relatives.

Please know that you are with us in spirit. It is often mentioned that many are not present so you are remembered.
