2014 Bridgeport Diocesan Synod

Maryann Calabrese, CND

I applied and have been appointed a General Delegate to the 2014 Bridgeport Diocesan Synod. The last synod was in 1981 and after the arrival of Bishop Frank Caggiano last Fall, he discerned that this year would be an appropriate opportunity to begin a process to take a comprehensive look at the situation within our diocese, look at the trends on the national level, examine how our diocesan institutions are responding to those trends and initiate a conversation about meeting the challenges of the Church in Fairfield County going forward. There are approximately 350 delegates from the parishes, priest and diaconal councils, religious communities, youth, schools, DREs, ecclesial movements and those appointed by the bishop. There will also be ecumenical observers from other faith traditions. After months of “listening sessions” held around the diocese, four themes were identified for our consideration: Empower the Young Church; Build Up Communities of Faith; Foster Evangelical Outreach; and Promote Works of Charity and Justice. The synod will meet in 5 sessions from September 2014 – September 2015. Bishop Caggiano has made it very clear, and ongoing formation will emphasize, that a synod is “more a process of discernment than it is of deliberation....We need to suspend our initial reaction that ‘we’re going to solve this problem by doing X’ and take a step back and deliberate – to allow discernment to occur, to allow the Holy Spirit to enlighten us about what God is asking us to do.” I ask your prayers that we may be receptive to the Spirit and conduits of God’s plan for the future of our diocese.
