At graduation time over the years, a popular activity was the “Grad Sleepover” which was held in our school gym. The girls would bring their sleeping bags and “camp out” till the next morning. Not much sleep would be had, as lots of fun and entertaining things were planned through the night into the wee hours of the morning.

Our school closed its doors in June 2011. In June 2012 the former vice-principal very kindly booked a church hall and put on a “Grad Sleepover” for that graduating class. When Viola, one of the grads who was a part of that gathering in 2012, learned that the former vice-principal was not able to do the same for the Class of 2013, she decided to take it on herself. Doesn’t this gesture speak volumes of her experience at Holy Angels? She had a meeting with New Dawn Enterprises - a non-profit group - who just purchased the school and convent last May, to see if the “sleepover” could be held in HAH gym. They loved the idea and they said “YES”!

When I arrived that August evening, it did my heart so good just to see the school lit up “like a Christmas tree”, after its being closed these last two years. The girls were ecstatic! A gentleman from New Dawn took us to the third floor which is already being rented for women from Saudi Arabia. Their husbands are studying at Cape Breton University while they are taking classes at Holy Angels to help in their transition to our culture. One of the classrooms has been transformed into a day care for their children, too. Although Holy Angels High is no longer how we knew it, it was a joy for us to be there and see how alive Holy Angels is, once again. To think that these students spent only one year at HAH truly shows what that experience meant to them. A couple of weeks later, I met one of the grads and asked her how she liked the “sleepover.” She said, “It was awesome!”
