ASSOCIATE NEWS – Sr. Joan Mahoney

THE CELEBRATIONS OF MARGUERITE HAVE BEGUN!

On Saturday, January 11 in Illinois, the associates and sisters gathered in South Holland, IL for prayer and festivities that included a piñata and dancing. Certainly, Marguerite’s joy was well celebrated! In the first picture: Sr. Bea Baker and Eva Williams enjoying the events. The second picture: Maria Vazquez holds the piñata and hitting stick. The third picture: Karen Fleszewski, Sr. Darleen Mayo, Eva Williams, Sr. Julia Lydon, and Alicia Parkinson prepare for dancing.

Associates, associate candidates and sisters attended Liturgy at St. Mary’s, Providence, RI, January 11th and then had a delicious brunch and joyfully shared prayer together at associate Christine McMichael’s home.

35TH ANNIVERSARY OF ASSOCIATE RELATIONSHIP: 2016 is the 35th anniversary of the Congregation of Notre Dame Associate Relationship. Some of the events that have been planned so far for this special anniversary are:

  • A tree will be planted at the mother house on Sherbrooke Street in Montreal as a symbol of solidarity. The Central Office invites associate groups to commemorate the anniversary locally by planting their own tree or shrub “creating a living network across the planet celebrating 35 years of our Associate Relationship.”
  • The Congregation of Notre Dame archive services dedicated the month of November in their calendar to the Associate Relationship (November, 1981, was the month that the Congregation of Notre Dame received approval from Rome to initiate the Associate Relationship).
  • A number of associates in Blessed Sacrament Province have indicated interest in a Pilgrimage to Montreal in the Footsteps of Marguerite Bourgeoys during July. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested.

My hope is that local communities will initiate anniversary events.

VOCATION NEWS – Srs. Peggy Doyle & Mary Ann Rossi

On December 2nd, the Congregation of Notre-Dame sisters of Staten Island, Congregation of Notre Dame associates, and some women who are interested in becoming associates, provided the supper at Project Hospitality on Staten Island. Sister Margaret Giroux baked the rolls for the dinner. The amount of absolutely delicious food could have fed a small army! It was a great experience for all of us… and a wonderful treat for the more that 50 homeless people who were served.

CHRISTMAS SEASON AT LOURDES HEALTHCARE CENTER: We are very grateful to the Congregation of Notre Dame Communities who sent gifts and cards to the sisters at Lourdes. We put your gifts to good use buying poinsettia plants for each room, giving a clothing gift on Christmas morning and individual bags of personal care items at Epiphany. Sister Mary Ann attempted to read the cards sent to those who are no longer able to read or comprehend on their own. In addition to the Congregation of Notre Dame sisters gifts, others reached out to “our” sisters. Brigit Cotter (associate Bonnie Cotter’s daughter) suggested to her prayer group at her high school to make individual cards for each sister. When I delivered the cards, I told them about these young people. They were so touched and heartened by their outreach. The “elves” in the first grade at the Villa sent enough “snack bags” for the Epiphany party for the sisters and others on the second floor.

We ended the Season with an EPIPHANY PARTY suggested and hosted by Sister Cathy Crowley and animal friends “Muffin” and “Shadow”... the hits of the party!!! Refreshments, Carols, New Year’s wishes in four languages, and gift giving were part of the afternoon’s festivities. As we were leaving the Sisters said over and over: The best part is being together! Sisters Suzanne Poulin and Mary Ann Rossi
