St. Mary’s Convent in Newcastle, (Miramichi) NB

This is the vacant lot – seen from King George Highway and looking up toward the church - where St. Mary’s Convent in Newcastle, (Miramichi) NB used to be. A few days work with heavy equipment and trucks have done their work. It’s level now and ready for a new life, a new purpose. The sign on the fence indicates the plan for this property. Such a facility is very much needed. May it be a blessing for those who build it and those who will dwell there.

The Paris Agreement – What Does it Mean?

There is a wide variety of reaction to the Paris Climate Conference process and the signed agreement. In my opinion, the greatest value of what was achieved in Paris comes from the Hope generated. I come from a generation of activists who truly believe that change is possible and justice will prevail because one of the main campaigns of our time was the anti-apartheid movement for South Africa.

Working with churches and NGO's, we saw our dreams become reality. That experience has stayed with many of us until this day. The generations that followed have been touched more by despair and hopelessness as they lived through several economic crisis and saw ecological concerns worsening with hardly a concern expressed by governments and leaders. The youth of the world have been mobilized around the issue of global warming.

This agreement is not perfect. But after years of campaigning, we have some strong commitments in writing. The global climate movement will be encouraged by this progress. The time of pessimism and despair is coming to an end. A major step has been taken to move us forward. As stated by GreenFaith.org, the agreement achieved in Paris is the “end of the Beginning.” The commitment we made in our Corporate Stance to support our Government in its Paris Commitments, will be more important than ever as we move to the next step.

Book : "The Church of Mercy"

As we enter the Jubilee Year of Mercy, some book study groups might be interested in using "The Church of Mercy" by Pope Francis. It is a collection of Francis’ homilies presented during the first year of his papacy. In it we find his vision for the Catholic Church, how to be citizens of the world and how to answer God’s call for evangelization. It is published by Loyola Press, 2014.
