Canada – we can still do better

Maura McGrath, CND

As Advent quickly becomes Christmas, we recognize a little more deeply the connection between the circumstances of Mary and Joseph, expecting a child and searching for a place and the almost 65 million human beings fleeing their homes and looking for asylum. Many of us are more aware of the connection between the suffering of Mother Earth and what happens to human beings whom we call refugees.

In October, Action Réfugiés Montréal hosted a Pre-Election Panel entitled ‘Canada’s Integrity at Stake: Ensuring Justice for Refugeed People.’ According to the panellists, Canadians have reasons to be proud. Yet, the panellists noted the current backlash against refuge seekers. Lamentably, sixty percent of Canadians believe that Canada is accepting too many refugees, that is, non-white refugees. The message was and is Canada can do better. We can do better. If you wish to read a summary of the notes go to www.actionr.org

If you have the time take a look at the entire website of Actions Réfugiés.
