In the Heart of
the World

Mary, Archetype of a Maternal Church

Day 4: Wednesday, Week 1

Pope Francis in The Joy of the Gospel reminds us of the close connection between Mary, the Church and each member of the faithful. Intuitively, we sense that the “Annunciation was the model of what God wanted to achieve in each of us. By the power of the Spirit, Christ is always born mysteriously and willingly, becoming incarnate in us…”

It is important then that our hearts become like Mary’s, the good soil in which the seed, the word of God, Jesus, can be conceived, nurtured, given time to grow, to flourish (Lk 8:11-15). Thus, Jesus, the Word of God, can be brought to birth, that is, actualized in our behaviour each day (Mk 3:31-35; Lk 8:21).

Reflection

Mandala section created by Rachel

The Annunciation is the model of what God wants to achieve in each one of us. Read the Annunciation (Lk 1:26-38) putting your name in place of Mary’s.

  • What did I experience as I read the text with my name?
  • What do I want to say to God?
  • What does it mean for me to become the good soil in which the seed, the word of God, Jesus, can be conceived, nurtured, given time to grow, to flourish in my life daily (Lk 8:11-15)?

Prayer

Mary, Virgin and mother,
You who, moved by the Holy Spirit,
welcomed the word of life
in the depths of your humble faith:
As you gave yourself completely to the Eternal One,
Help us to say our ‘Yes’
to the urgent call, as pressing as ever,
to proclaim the good news of Jesus.
(Pope Francis, the Joy of the Gospel, # 288)
